Here are a few things you may want to consider to enhance your virtual interview experience:
1. Before the interview – Prepare
☐ Learn about the Minneapolis Public Schools from its website, social media pages, and press releases. Search online for articles and reviews to read what others have to say. Know the mission and vision.
☐ Before the interview, have insight on the district’s strengths and weaknesses.
☐ Make a list of the core requirements of the role and review common interview questions. If desired, use the Microsoft Office STAR technique interview prep template to structure your answers.
☐ Ask the recruiter or Talent Acquisition Lead for a list of people you’ll meet, learn about them on LinkedIn, and prepare some questions that are specific to each interviewer.
☐ Print a copy of your resume to refer to if needed. Have a digital one ready should you need to email a copy.
2. Before the interview – Create a conducive space
☐ Choose a quiet, well-lit spot without noise and distractions.
☐ Use a wired connection or locate as close to your router as possible.
☐ Make certain you test and thoroughly check your equipment.
☐ Keep your notes, resume, a glass of water, and pen and paper handy.
3. During the interview
☐ Silence your phone and close any computer programs not needed for the interview.
☐ Log in/use the link provided or call the conference number a few minutes early.
☐ Sit up straight and speak clearly with a positive tone. Be certain to look into the webcam when speaking. Smile.
☐ At the end, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions. Limit to no more than 3 to 4. Restate your interest in the position and ask about next steps. Remember to thank the interviewer(s) for his/her/their time.
4. After the interview
☐ Send a personalized thank you email to the lead interviewer and others if you have their email contact.
☐ Review your notes and prepare for the next round (that’s how confident you are!)
