MFT Negotiations
April 14 Update

MPS leadership will be working over the next weeks to update budgets due to new financial information related to:

  • The costs of tentative contract agreements recently reached with the teacher and educational support professional (ESP) chapters of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT).
  • The financial impact of student enrollment losses during this school year.

More information can be found in the presentation created by the Finance department.

March 27 Update: 7:20 p.m.

Students will return to their classrooms on Tuesday, March 29 after members of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) voted today to ratify the tentative contract agreement and agreed to plans for returning to work.

As part of the agreement, Monday, March 28 will be a transition day for teachers and educational support professionals (ESPs) to prepare for the return of students.

The following schedule changes were also agreed upon by MPS and MFT to make up missed time:

  • Students will attend school on Friday, April 1– moving the currently scheduled teacher record-keeping day to Saturday, April 23.

  • Beginning on Monday, April 11, add 42 minutes to each school day for the remainder of the school year.

  • Change the date for the end of Quarter 3 to Thursday, April 21; change the date for the beginning of Quarter 4 to Friday, April 22.

  • Extend the end of the school year to Friday, June 24.

Thank you for your continued patience. Please continue to visit our webpage for updates.

March 26 Update: 11:45 a.m.

After further discussion with MFT yesterday, we have together decided to make Monday, March 28 a transition day with staff returning to work, and Tuesday, March 29, the day that students will return to school. These plans are, of course, pending the MFT vote on the contract. The discussion yesterday revealed the very real need for teachers, ESPs and principals to have a day to ensure the best possible welcome for students.

We understand MFT is voting on this agreement today and tomorrow. Once we are notified about the results of the vote, we will provide families with more information.

MFT and MPS are also proposing the following schedule for making up missed instructional time (pending board approval of the revised calendar):

  • Host school on Friday, April 1 – moving the currently scheduled teacher record-keeping day to another day,

  • Beginning on April 11 (after spring break), add 42 minutes to the end of each school day for the remainder of the school year,

  • Quarter 3 will end on April 21, 2022 and Quarter 4 will begin on April 22, 2022. The April 1, 2022 record keeping day will be rescheduled to Saturday, April 23, 2022,

  • Extend the end of the school year to June 24.

We apologize for the inconvenience of this date change for student return. As much as we all want our students back in schools, we know the right thing to do is to be fully prepared for their return. Thank you for your continued patience.

Dear MPS Community,

MPS is extremely pleased to welcome students back to school on Monday, March 28, pending an MFT membership vote. MPS and MFT reached a tentative contract agreement for our teachers and educational support professionals.

This has been a life-changing experience for all of us. Through it all, we have seen the power and passion of our community, the commitment of our staff and the intense need to focus on our students. I believe MPS and MFT have arrived at a fair and equitable agreement that honors the requests and needs of our staff.

MPS looks forward to sharing details about the tentative agreement in partnership with MFT leadership. Instructional time lost during the strike may be made up by:

  • Using record keeping days as student contact days (record-keeping would be moved)
  • Adding minutes to the school day
  • Extending the end of the school year

Graduation ceremony dates are not impacted and will go forward as planned. More details about calendar changes will be shared with families soon.

We all know that teachers and ESPs are an important part of what makes our schools the learning sites on which our students and families rely. I’m extremely grateful for their work, determination and dedication. I am equally grateful to families and community organizations who supported their students through enormous difficulties during this time out of school. Thank you. I look forward to seeing everyone back in our schools supporting our students on Monday.
