Minneapolis Public Schools and the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers are currently negotiating a successor contract in effect between 2019 and 2021.

July 31 session

On July 31, 2019, the MPS and MFT-ESP bargaining teams met for the eighth negotiation session. At the session, MPS re-presented it’s June 12 proposal on group health insurance for the unit. To accompany the proposal, MPS provided a thorough presentation addressing 2019 and, using assumed 2020 health insurance premium costs to ESP unit members.  The presentation compared premiums under the MFT-ESP’s existing plan to the savings ESP members would realize if they join the District’s enhanced benefit plan. The MPS team reiterated it’s very strong interest in bringing the employees covered by the MFT-ESP contract into the enhanced benefit plan, citing reduced premium costs for employees, as well as language that guarantees MPS will share in the cost of any future premium increases.

June 12 Session

MPS and ESP bargaining teams met for the fourth time on June 12, 2019.  The ESP team walked MPS through the last of their proposals for the term of this contract. The total cost of the ESP proposals comes to approximately $50 million for the two-year term of the successor contract.  Unfortunately, this significantly exceeds the District’s bargaining authority.
