University of St Thomas Testing Requirements

University of St Thomas Testing Requirements:
All applicants to the residency program must either take the GRE or the NES Essential skills tests in order to be admitted to the University of St Thomas. Although there is no individual cut score for admission on any of these tests, scores will be considered in admission and scholarship decisions. For more information, please refer to the St Thomas Testing Requirements Website: https://www.stthomas.edu/education/admissionandaid/testing-requirements/ .

The GRE vs. NES- Which to Take?:
You may take either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the NES Exams for admission into St Thomas. Both are viewed equally for the admissions requirement, but there are a few differences outlined below.

NES Essential Skills tests: Reading, Writing and Math ( https://www.nestest.com/PageView.aspx?f=GEN_Tests.html): costs $100

  • The NES Tests measure academic skills and subject specific content knowledge needed for teaching.
  • This test is shorter and less expensive than the GRE, but there are fewer testing locations and dates available.
  • The NES can be used as the basic skills exam for licensure.

GRE ( https://www.ets.org/gre ) : costs $205

  • The GRE is measures your verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing skills, and is commonly used for admission to many graduate level programs.
  • There are several test centers and dates in Minnesota to take the GRE.
  • The GRE may be used to show basic skills competency for the initial teacher licensure exam. When applying for your initial teaching license in Minnesota, all teachers must take a basic skills exam in reading, writing, and math. Your scores on the GRE may be used to show basic skills competency in place of the MTLE basic skills exam.

Overall, we recommended that you take the NES due to lower cost and it being less challenging tests.

Free Test Prep:

Both exams have free test prep materials available online:

When to take the test:
We encourage all applicants to the residency program to begin studying now for the NES or the GRE using the free online test prep materials. However, you do not have to sign up to take either exam until after you have been notified if you have been selected as a finalist for the program in early March, and have until April 1st to take the exam. The reason is that we are looking into whether we might be able to reimburse finalists for the cost of taking either exam, and if we are able to secure funding will only be able to pay for tests for finalists. We also do not want anyone to have to take the exam unless they have been selected as a finalist for the program. All finalists will have to take the exam by April 1, 2018 in order to be admitted into St Thomas and the residency program.

UST Application:
When completing your St. Thomas application, you will need to select a date in the future that you are planning to take your tests. You do not need to register for the test at this time and should pick a date in March.
